27 August update
This sock is coming together beautifully. I’ve turned the heel, which is one of my favourite things to do. I get a real sense of satisfaction from starting on the foot. It makes me feel like the sock is nearly finished, even when I’m lying to myself!!
Another thing that is great about getting onto the foot part with a cabled sock? Cables get better and better with more repeats.
Now, about that heel. As you can see it’s a traditional Eye of Partridge heel. with a stocking stitch back of leg. There’s a variant on this sock lurking in the back of my mind for a eye of partridge back of leg the whole way down. Will it be too busy with the cables at the front? We’re going to find out later in this process!

New sock! Cables, magnificence and a back story to match. Right now this lovely sock is being sampled knitted in a Camellia pink using Hawthorne kettle dyed yarn from Knit Picks.
I know however this is a sock which is going to shine in the burgundy, forest green and golden range. This is a sock for the horse lords of Rohan in ancient times when it was still part of Gondor. If you love Lord of the Rings, this is a sock you are going to want to make.
This sock has three separate cable sections and an option to do the whole back of the sock in eye of partridge or stocking stitch depending on your comfort levels. I’ll be updating this post regularly with how it’s coming along!
